Ar9 barrel extension

This is your ultimate AR9 pistol guide for ! When we're through, you'll know everything you need to build the perfect AR9 pistol in a supersonic or subsonic suppressor-friendly configuration. Looking for answers about shouldering an AR pistol brace? We wrote a guide for that, too. All data and recommendations in this guide were compiled from real shooters who've built and tested AR9s with different parts.

Let's begin! The AR9 pistol is a new 9mm variant of the AR The AR9 is not just an AR with a 9mm conversion kit installed — those guns use special parts to adapt the factory upper and lower receivers for the 9mm cartridge. The AR9 pistol instead uses a new lower receiver aptly called the AR9 lower and a stripped AR upper receiver with a 9mm barrel, new bolt carrier group, and an AR buffer system and lower parts kit.

AR9-specific buffers are available, but we'll touch on that later. That's just the tip of the iceberg. The AR9 and AR look alike, but each uses different parts and systems to operate.

The AR uses a direct-impingement system with a gas tube or a gas-operated piston animated right to cycle the bolt:. A rifle round has a lot of powder. It produces a lot of gas when fired, and burning all that powder takes time. This is the only way to achieve the right amount of velocity a rifle round requires. But all that round's energy would 1. That gas must expend more of its energy on the bullet itself before being harnessed to cycle the bolt.

This is why gas must travel down the barrel and through a gas tube. This is also why ARs have different gas system lengths — some rounds and barrel lengths produce less pressure, some produce more. The 9mm cartridge and its bolt was designed to cycle with blowback recoil, not gas. The 9mm burns nearly all of its powder rapidly in the firing chamber not in the chamber and barrel like a rifle round. This is why the AR9 uses blowback. Some builders have attempted to use gas impingement in AR9s and pistol-caliber ARs with unreliable results.

Using gas impingement with a 9mm cartridge requires an incredibly short gas tube and ultra-light buffer and spring. This dramatically increases felt recoil. No bueno. Besides using different methods to cycle the bolt, the AR9 and AR use many different parts:. The AR and AR9 bolt carrier groups are totally different. Because the AR uses gas impingement, its bolt carrier group is not designed for blowback operation, and vice versa.

The typical AR9 bolt cannot be modified to work with gas impingement. AR9 and AR bolt carrier group parts are typically not interchangeable or compatible with each other. The AR lower requires a conversion block to be installed inside the magazine well and lower receiver before it can take any 9mm magazines.

Different AR conversion blocks will accept different types of 9mm magazines. Conversion blocks can get expensive. Most have the mag release pre-installed, though some may use the AR magazine release included in your parts kit.

The AR9 and AR barrel are similar, but different. The barrel is one of the few components that directly affect the accuracy and weight of your build.

Designed for corrosion resistance, this barrel will not let you down. This barrel is machined from Chrome Moly Steel, heat treated to RC hardness, and properly stress relieved. This barrel has a nitride finish for increased strength and durability.

It is chambered 9mm chamber, with a twist rate. This is the perfect barrel for an AR9 build, keeping weight to an absolute minimum, while still offering a significant ballistic advantage.

I learned long ago to take advantage of the market trends I mentioned several paragraphs above. The uninitiated may be surprised by the complex variables that go into the decision of which barrel to choose.

But to get the most out of your rifle, you need to consider all of them.

The difference between cold hammer and mil-spec barrels lies in the manufacturing process — or, more specifically, in how the rifling is cut into the barrel. Gun barrel rifling — the spiral grooves in the barrel — was developed by the Germans a few hundred years ago, and was inspired by how a slight twist in the fletching the feathers helped the accuracy of archers.

That slight twist made the arrows spin after they were released from the bow. German gunsmiths applied the same concept to their barrels by cutting twisting grooves in the barrel. This twist helps stabilize the bullet in its trajectory, making the weapon more accurate at a longer distance. The Germans introduced rifling to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, giving us an advantage over the British because our soldiers could engage targets with greater accuracy from a longer distance.

Cold hammering forged is a relatively new way to cut rifling into a gun barrel. A barrel blank is inserted into a machine and a mandrel in the shape of the rifling grooves is inserted into the blank. Hydraulic hammers pound on the barrel, shaping the inside of the barrel into the grooves.

Mil-spec barrels are made the old-fashioned way, by cutting the rifling into the barrels. For most, a cutting rod with a number of blades increasing in size is pulled through a barrel blank while twisting.

Some manufacturers use a rod with a single blade to cut to the depth of the rifling in one motion. It takes longer to make the cut, but some firers stand by it.

Cold hammer forged AR barrels are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, but the initial investment in the machinery is rather substantial.

Only larger manufacturers who can finance that machinery use this process. This process does, however, create a high-quality and incredibly durable barrel.

It may affect your bottom line, though. Otherwise, an AR used for home defense or varmint control on your property will meet your needs perfectly with a mil-spec barrel. There are two basic options to choose from for your custom AR barrel: chrome or stainless steel lining.

As with most aspects of customizing your AR, the decision will come down to how you plan to use your rifle. Chrome lining helps your barrel last longer and it makes for easier cleaning and maintenance. This can affect accuracy at longer distances, if only minimally. A chrome-lined barrel will be accurate to yards or more — army shooters qualify on meter ranges — and if you fire a great number of rounds, your chrome-lined AR barrel will last longer.

On the other hand, many competitive shooters prefer stainless steel AR barrels so they can enhance their accuracy over a longer trajectory for their targets. At Wing Tactical, we have barrel lengths available from 7. You can opt for a Again, how you plan to use your AR will play a part in how long a barrel you choose.

A longer barrel will allow the expanding gas behind the round to build to a greater pressure, which will increase muzzle velocity, and all the rifling will further stabilize the bullet.

The longer the barrel, the more accurate you can be. Shorter barrels will be less stable and therefore make it more difficult to reengage your target and have a nice, tight shot group. The FM Products blast diffuser extends past the M-LOK handguard and directs all the excess gas and concussion of your shots forward instead of the sides, making this much more enjoyable to shoot at indoor ranges. Ar Barrel Extension Threads? Thread starter seanb Start date Apr 12, Joined Jan 23, Messages I have been threading AR barrels for barrel extensions for a number of years.

I am going to try an AR barrel now. I have not been able to find any info on thread specs for the barrel extension from any manufacturer and or gap between bolt and barrel face etc.

I plan on using a dpms pattern extension in my armalite ar I learned that as long as you use a dpms pattern bolt you can use a dpms pattern barrel extension in an armalite.

ar9 barrel extension

I would use armalite but have not been able to find an extension for sale in the last 6 months. Joined Oct 16, Messages Joined Jun 12, Messages Wrat is correct.
